

'The Seventh Gadeok Mullet Festival' will be held for two days from 26th on Gadeok Island of Gangseogu Busan to which flocks of mullet swarm when spring comes each year. This is a festival that has as its motif 'mullet gathering' which uses the conventional method of mullet fishing practiced for approximately 160 years as a long tradition on Gadeok Island. The 'mullet gathering' is distinctive because it is a traditional cultural heritage that has been passed down nowhere else in the country. Beginning with the morning road procession that unfolds on the region of the ferry pier of Daehang village of Gadeokdo, a variety of events take place including drum dance, celebration concert by guest singers, mullet sampling party, mullet cooking demonstration, collecting prescribed quantity of mullets, catching mullet with bare hand, and one heart walking event. Spring is the season for mullet fishing, and it is known for its soft flesh and fragrant sweet taste. So, it is a special product of Gadeok Island that was presented to the royal table as a tribute. Because it is rich in nutrients, so much so that sometimes it is taken as medicine, mullet is effective in supplementing for lost appetite during winter and for nutrition. The festival is highly popular among visitors of a range of age groups because they can enjoy the fragrant taste of mullets and participate in various events on Gadeok Island that is filled with spring fragrance.
