The entire area of the Nakdong River valley that includes Myeongjidong and Shinhodong of Gangseogu as well as parts of Jinhae City of Gyeongsang Namdo have for a long time been a famous habitat for migratory birds and is protected, having been designated as a cultural heritage. This area is situated to the west of the region that is covered if one travels from Dadaedong Sahagu of Busan Metropolitan City via Jangrimdong and Hadandong until one arrives at Geumgokdong of Bukgu. There are many small and big deltas on the Nakdong River basin including Ulsookdo and Ilungdo.
The area around the delta not only has shallow water and vibrant interface of river and sea water but also is rich in foods for migratory birds including a range of planktons, shellfish, and small fishes, because the tidal flat on either side of the riverbank is well developed.
The many reed forests dispersed in different parts of the delta provide food and nesting place for the migratory birds and as such, attracts many migratory birds. Another reason that migratory birds flock to the downstream of the Nakdong River is because geographically, it is located on the southernmost part of the Korean Peninsula, thus playing the role of exit/entrance gate for the migratory birds flying across the sea. Moreover, because the area is cool in the summer and warm in the winter, it offers an ideal place for the birds to pass the winter and to breed. This is a place that carries a lot of scientific and academic significance not least because over 43 families and 130 species including ducks, snipes, egrets, storks, etc. are recorded as having been observed there.
